We, we tend to be really hard on ourselves as women, right? Yeah. Really hard on ourselves. And you, you have this tendency to say, well, if I can't do it perfectly, then I'm not gonna do it at all. Yeah. But when you adopt that training mindset and you really just. Commit to being consistent versus being perfect.
You know, that's when you stop feeling like a failure every single time that you stumble and things don't go as planned or you have setbacks. Um, you know, I think that's, that's a huge shift that really makes. It makes the process easier. It makes the journey easier because you're just accepting of life's not perfect and it's gonna be up and down.
Right. And I think that you said something that's really important in any goal is sustainability. Right? Right. Like you have to be able to commit, like you've said. And I actually like that. That phrase too, of like trying versus committing because trying see, like you said, it's dipping a toe in the water and it's just kind of like getting a feel for it, seeing how you like it.
But when you've committed to it, it's like this is how I want my life to be, and so you're more willing to pursue it. Right? Yes,
absolutely.

She's a kind heart full of inspiration and motivation. I love her boldness and her laugh is contagious. Aw, thank you.
Sometimes I think that I have a, a nervous laugh, so thank you for saying that. My laugh is contagious. That actually brought a really big smile to my face. So on today's episode, we talk to Jessica Hampton or Jess. And, and Jess is a certified personal trainer and accountability coach who is passionate about helping busy women feel strong, capable, and confident in their own skin.
Without restriction or burnout. As a wife and mom of two, she knows what it's like to juggle real life when trying to prioritize your health through private coaching. In her membership, she teaches sustainable strategies that fit into real life so her clients can lose weight, keep it off, and feel good doing it.
And during this conversation, we really hit on. Foundational health habits, the all or nothing mentality that many women have going into fitness goals or entrepreneurial goals or saving and money goals, whatever your goal is like oftentimes it's tied to the all or nothing mentality, and we really get into that here.
And we also talk about how to stick with long-term goals, especially when it feels like it's moving slowly or you're never going to get there, and then trying versus training mentality. So I really, really love this conversation and if you want to talk. A little bit more about these topics. You can check out episodes six, seven, and 30 here on the Blissfully Bold podcast and I'm going to link those below for you in, uh, other episodes that you might like.
Alright, well let's get into it. Well, welcome Jessica. Thank you for joining me on the show today. Um, I really appreciate it and I like to kick off. Every episode with learning a little bit more about you and specifically I wanna know like what is your superpower? Like, what makes you kick ass at leading women to stick to their health journeys for the long haul?
Hi Gabby. I'm so excited to be here. Thank you for having me. Um, okay. So I think that my superpower is teaching women how to cut through the noise and make their weight loss or their health and fitness journey. Simple and sustainable and feel like it's something that they can actually do. Like they are like, okay, I can fit this into my life and I can accomplish my goals.
Yeah. Um, because I've been there myself. Um, you know, I know firsthand how frustrating it is to try every diet. To feel stuck in that cycle of the all or nothing thinking. Mm-hmm. Um, and just really struggling with wondering if weight loss is possible, like wondering if hitting my goals is possible. Um, so I really like to help women just make it super simple.
Like we really tend to overcomplicate the process and what needs to happen. And you know, there, there's tons of conflicting advice out there, right? Like we hear. So many different things. Mm-hmm. So it can be a real challenge to figure out like what to do and how to do it without feeling so overwhelmed by the process.
Truthfully, I think we, we think that the process is so much more complicated than it really has to be. So I just like to break it down and make it super simple and make it doable and make it fun. Like, you know, this journey is, it's a journey. It takes a while, right? Mm-hmm. It's not gonna last just a month, and then you go back to your old habits.
And so like. We need to make it fit into your lifestyle. We need to make it fun, right? And, and be able to enjoy your life at the same time that you're trying to reach some goals. So I feel like that's my superpower.
That's awesome. Because I feel like. If you've ever been on a weight loss journey, which if you're a woman, you probably have been just because like that seems to be like society's thing, right?
It's like, oh, focus on your weight, focus on your body. So I love that you touched on the all or nothing like mentality and simplifying the process, because I feel like the simplifying the process might help a little bit with the all or nothing. So can you tell us a little bit more about what that simplified process looks like for you and working with you?
Yes. So I think that you're absolutely right. It does help with that all or nothing mentality. They're very, they're very much tied together. Mm-hmm. Um, I think that what we have to do is really focus on those. Core foundational habits of being a healthy person, right? And so those are things like moving your body, eating a balanced diet, hydrating your body, um, getting enough sleep, managing your stress, you know, like all of those pieces.
And I really feel like, I know definitely in my experience and what I see with a lot of my clients is, is we tend to focus on things. Outside of those, like we tend to focus on the really small like nitpicky things. 'cause I think that we, like I said, we overcomplicate the process. Yeah. Mm-hmm. So we, I think that we think those like focusing on a balanced diet and focusing on moving your body and hydrated, we think those things are like too simple.
Like maybe those things don't work right When in reality they do work. When you're putting them all together, when you're doing them consistently. Mm-hmm. And so I think like just coming back to it isn't about doing everything perfectly. I think especially as women, we have a tendency to feel like.
Everything has to be perfect. Whatever perfect means. Um, which is usually intense, right? Yeah. Like it's usually intense and, and overdoing it. Yeah. We have a tendency to think it has to be perfect, and if it's not perfect, then we might as well not do it at all. Mm-hmm. It's really not about that. It's about bringing people back to.
Doing the healthy habits consistently in a way that fits into their life. Right. In a way that Right. That serves them, that helps them feel good. Um, mm-hmm. I, I think we have this tendency to, to jump into a program that doesn't make us feel good
because
the only thing in our mind is seeing a skinnier body or, you know, like this losing weight.
Right, right. Um, and so it's really not about being perfect, it's about being consistent most of the time. Mm-hmm. With just being healthy. Mm-hmm. Learning to to stay in it.
Right. And like to speak to that consistency like we touched on a little while ago about how long the journey can be and that consistency can feel like nothing is actually happening.
So how do you like help women with that, I guess. That mindset of being in the journey for the home stretch or for the long haul. Like for being able to have that big goal of like, I wanna lose 20, 30 x amount of pounds, or I want to like drop this many dress sizes, or whatever their health goal or their weight loss goal is, right?
Like that feels like a big goal a lot of times. And sometimes you can. Feel defeated when it's not going as quickly as you'd like it to go. So how do you help women kind of get a handle on that mentality?
Yeah, yeah. I think that we all feel that way, and I think that you can even look at other aspects of life and recognize that like things don't happen overnight.
We want them to, we all want them to happen overnight. We want those results immediately. Right. True. Yeah. Um, I think one of the things that I. Like to do is focus on. The whole body, whole self transformation that's gonna occur. Like one of the things that I really do with women when we start working together is talk about their transformation.
Talk about like what is your life gonna look like when you've lost mm-hmm. X amount of pounds, and we really focus on way more than what the scale says. You know, how are you gonna feel in your body? How much more patient are you gonna be? How much better are you gonna feel about yourself? And when you feel better internally?
We are more patient, we are more nurturing, we are more loving, you know, we have better interactions with people around us, and I know that that's important to us. A lot of us are moms, right? And so we wanna be like patient with our kids and loving with our kids and, you know, so I like to really focus on the transformation and, and what it's gonna do in all parts of your life, not just.
How skinny you are, right? Right. Because so much more happens than just how you look in a swimsuit or how you look in an outfit, right? Um, there really is so much that happens internally. So I do like to really focus on that because I think that helps you stay. In the journey and, and one of the things that I always have people do, I recommend is writing out your why.
Sit down for like 10 or 15 minutes and just write down why you're doing what you're doing and think through how life is gonna look different, past the scale. And I think that that's so powerful. Especially like on days that you're struggling, you can go back and reread that in your own words and it's so powerful to see.
Okay, like. This is why I'm doing what I'm doing. There's a bigger picture here. Um, it's not just what happened on the scale this week, you know? Right. Um, so I really like to focus on that full transformation. Mm-hmm. Um, and how your life really changes. 'cause it, it just is so much more than the scale, even though I know when we go into it, like the, the main priority is how the weight we wanna lose.
Right.
Right.
So,
so one of the things I think that. Kind of gets in the way or plays a part, not gets in the way, but plays a part in the whole, it's taking too long, is that you are scrolling on social media or you're in Facebook groups or whatever it is. Usually it's like in a group setting, right? Like you're part of a community.
If you're in. The fitness space usually, right? Like people are there and they're encouraging each other. So like how do you kind of get out of the whole comparison or imposter feeling of like, I'm trying and I'm trying and I. It doesn't seem to be working and their results are better and how can I keep going when it's just taking so long?
So I think that in some of your content, you've actually kind of addressed this for the trying versus training. So can we talk a little bit about that? Because you had written that trying is a toe in the water and training is saying I'm in. I may stumble, but I'm not stopping. And I feel like that's such a really good like shift because when people think about training, they think about how intensive it can be, right?
And how disciplined you should be. And that can actually like loop back in to the all or nothing mentality. So how do you help people deal with comparisonitis and like reframe it to the trying versus training?
Yeah, so I think number one, the first point I would love to make is I think when we see people online who are really fit and who are really disciplined, and we see these pictures and we see them eating these really healthy foods and working out.
We're just seeing a piece, like, it's just like anything with social media, we're seeing the highlight reel. Right? Right. You're seeing the good workout, you're seeing the good day, you're, you know, and so I try really hard to share like all the pieces of my journey, because it's not always like that. You're not always motivated.
Right. But we do see. These amazing transformations and it really like, as a trainer, it infuriates me as someone who's been on this journey and it's taken a long time and infuriates me because we are seeing someone, most of the time we're seeing someone who chose an unsustainable route. I'm not gonna say that they chose the wrong route because I think everybody tries different things and they gotta figure out what works for for them.
I don't think there's necessarily like one way of doing this,
right.
But I do think that for the most part, you know, especially when you're seeing a timeframe attached to those pictures, they've chosen an unsustainable route. And you know, I'm working with women who are busy. Who, a lot of us are moms, a lot of us are like midlife.
We have careers, we have hobbies, like we have all these other things that are important. Mm-hmm. And we don't wanna drop all of those aspects of life. In order to go all in on losing some weight, like we still wanna tend to those other areas, right? Like those things are important to us. Yeah. Um, and we don't wanna let go of those.
And so I think it's important to recognize that this is. A part of your life and we really wanna focus on what is sustainable. What can you do that fits into your life that doesn't feel overwhelming, that doesn't take over your entire schedule, but makes you feel good, makes you work towards your goals, right?
Like we can fit in quick workouts and we can do quick food preps, and. Make it work and reach our goals without spending five hours in the kitchen on Sunday and without spending two hours at the gym every single day. Like so I think that, you know, learning that training is about. Being committed. I think that's the big thing is you know, you're committing yourself to this process and you're choosing to focus on consistency and creating a healthy life.
Like we want to create a life that we can do for another 40 or 50 years that makes us feel really good and gives us this happy, healthy life. Mm-hmm. Um, and so, you know, when you are committed. You understand that like no matter how long it's gonna take you, no matter how messy it gets, how many times you mess up, you're just in it, you're in it until the end and you're, you're committed to it.
And I think when you tell yourself that you're trying something mm-hmm. You're lacking that trust in yourself and therefore you're not committing. And so, you know, that is why you stay in that all or nothing mentality. You feel like you have to go all in. In order to see results and you have to really restrict yourself and be really, really hard on yourself, when in reality all you need to do is be committed to being consistent most of the time.
So that is the, that's the difference. You know, training is about giving yourself grace. Things are not always gonna go to plan, especially with like how chaotic our lives are. Like nothing goes according to especially being a mom, right? Yes. Like how many times have you
worked out in your kids at like.
There interrupting your workout? Yes.
Or like I, you know, my son's out volunteering and I'm in the parking lot, like getting workout in because you just have to learn that it, you just have to make it work. Mm-hmm. Like, you have to make it fit. Yeah. It's not gonna, like, the plan is not gonna go perfectly.
Like there's so many workouts that I do that we're not what I had planned to do, but I'm like, okay, well I'm moving my body, you know?
Right.
Um, so, and you know, I think it's really important to. When you commit to a, to a long process to saying, you know, like this is, this is a life change. This is what I want my lifestyle to be.
I wanna be healthy woman. I wanna be healthy for my kids. And if I have grandkids and my husband and my family and my friends, and just to be able to like experience life, then you are understanding that it's not a linear journey. That there's gonna be ups and downs. That there's gonna be times that things don't go as planned, like we just said.
Right? And you gotta give yourself grace. And so understanding, like it's not about perfection, it's about being consistent. It's about just showing up and, and loving yourself. And you know, another thing is we, we tend to be really hard on ourselves as women, right? Yeah. Really hard on ourselves. And you, you have this tendency to say, well, if I can't do it perfectly, then I'm not gonna do it at all.
But when you've committed to it, it's like, this is how I want my life to be. And so you're more willing to pursue it, right?
Yes, absolutely. Absolutely. I mean, you're just, you're. You just know that no matter what you're committed, you're in it. You know, there's no like mm-hmm. It, it kind of takes, you might not be confident. Yeah. You might not be totally confident, but you are willing to stay in it. And I think when you use the term trying, you're not committing And so you're, you're, you already know like, there's a chance that I'm gonna quit.
And so you're like almost giving yourself an out to quit and fall off Yeah. And be done and not, and not have any accountability from yourself or anyone else. Um, and that's not gonna get you to your goal. That's not gonna help you be happy and healthy, you know?
Yeah, that's true. So what kind of set you on this path?
Like what was your turning point of trying versus committing or training? I.
Um, okay. I know I can answer that right off the bat. So I, I have been overweight since I was really little. Mm-hmm. Um, I started gaining weight. My father passed away when I was six years old and I started putting on weight by the time I was nine.
I was, I was obese. Um, and so I spent many, many years, um. Yo-yo dieting up and down, restrictive dieting, like just trying so hard to lose the weight. And when I got to, I was mid thirties and I was engaged to get married, and I was like, oh my gosh, like, this is it. I, I'm gonna be in a wedding dress. Like that's super important to me.
I wanna look good in that wedding dress. I wanna feel good. So I did some really, um, intense things like I did really, um, long fasting. I did things that just did not make me feel good. Mm-hmm. Um. And I did end up losing a good amount of weight and I came home from my honeymoon and I had gained 10 pounds and I was like, okay.
I just like, I just have to find a different way. Like I'm just so mentally and physically exhausted from literally decades of dieting. Yeah. And struggling with my relationship with food, and I just was like. I just have to do something different. I just have to like push everything aside that I have been trying, everything that I feel like I've known is the correct thing to do.
Start listening to my body. Yeah. And start paying attention to what I'm putting in my body and start paying attention to what feels good and what doesn't feel good. Um, you know, what gives me energy, what makes me exhausted? Like just really saying, okay, I'm gonna listen to my body for the first time instead of following some program that was written, you know?
Yeah. By someone else that wasn't tailored to me. Um, and that really helped me. Mm-hmm. To. Heal my relationship with food. I had a really unhealthy relationship with food that helped me to work on that, and it helped me to just set the scale aside. I totally, I boxed up and put it in my garage and was like, I'm not doing it anymore.
Like, I just need a break. I'm not gonna pay attention to that. I'm not gonna let that dictate how I feel. Yeah. I'm gonna focus on those daily habits and how that makes me feel. And that was really the turning point for me is just saying, okay, like I'm just, I had always been committed. But I was committed to an unsustainable process, you know?
Right. So at this point I'm like, okay, I'm going all in on what's gonna make me feel good for the rest of my life. Right, right. What's gonna help me? I. Be healthy, what's gonna help me reach my goals? Because ultimately, yes, a goal is to lose weight. A goal is to be smaller. A goal is to, to like my body more.
Yes, that's a goal. But my ultimate goal is to be around for many years to be able to like move my body. Mm-hmm. Like I was watching a video today of a woman who is 78 dancing around and I was like, fast. That's what I wanna be. Yeah. That's what I wanna be able to do. And you see so many people. That are older that can't do that.
And I'm like, no, that's what I want. I don't, you know, keep me moving. Keep me. Yes. Experiencing life. I love that. That's what's important to me. I, um, so I think that was, that was a huge turning point for me and when things, things really changed.
That's awesome. And something that I heard you say, um, that I feel like goes back to something, um, that you said earlier was you said, you said just now that you were listening to your body more.
Mm-hmm. And I feel like that goes back to trusting yourself because you're listening to what your body needs and you're trusting like your, like your gut feeling, basically right. On how to keep moving forward. So I really, really like that. And I feel like it tied back into what you were saying earlier.
Yes. I, and I think we. We have lost trust in ourselves. Mm-hmm. Because we have been, we've spent so long, some of us have spent a really long time listening to other people or following other programs, or like, one great example is a lot of people who have dieted for a long time struggled to pay attention to their hunger and fullness cues.
They don't even recognize 'em because they've been paying attention to a clock or a diet that tells them to eat what, when. You know? And so like, yes, I think that we. Can trust ourselves more than we recognize, right? Like mm-hmm. We just have to go inward. We just have to be willing to listen. You have to be willing to stop and take the time to listen.
It takes time and it takes energy to do that. Um, and sometimes I think it can be easier for us to just be like, oh, just gimme the program. Well, I can't give you the, I can't give you, you know, I, I can't feel those things inside your body to, to help you know, you really need. To learn to listen to that and you can trust yourself.
You just have to start hearing your body again, right? You just have to start recognizing it. So I do think that that is a powerful approach that we all have to really relearn.
Yeah, definitely. So you actually have a course, right? Um, that helps women simplify the process and you touch on mindset and do you help them become more intuitive with their bodies.
Can you tell us more about your program and how people can work with you?
Yes. So I do have a course that's actually gonna be starting April 7th. It's, I'm gonna do a live beta course. Um, it is called the Habits that Actually Move The Scale, a Weight Loss Blueprint for busy Women. And it's really designed to cut through all that confusion.
It's designed to help women focus on those high impact habits that are gonna lead to real sustainable weight loss. It's not about being perfect, I don't subscribe to that. It is not about extreme diets. Or spending hours in the gym. I also don't subscribe to that. It's about like being practical. It's about figuring out what is doable, the habits that fit into your life, and that looks a little bit different for everyone.
Yeah. Now there's some core foundational habits that you have to have in order to be healthy. And lose weight and reach our health and fitness goals. And so we're gonna cover those. Um, we're gonna talk about nutrition, we're gonna talk about exercise, hydration, sleep, stress. Stress is a big thing that I think a lot of us are missing, especially in this phase of life.
Um, and it's not talked about enough. We're gonna talk about consistency, you know, we're gonna talk about troubleshooting, like all kinds of different things, but really we're just gonna like strip it down. I'm gonna make it so simple, right? Yeah. And I'm gonna give you, once you're done with the course.
You're gonna have a blueprint, you're gonna have a plan that's gonna work for you, that covers all the basics. And you're gonna walk away just being like, okay, I can do this. Like, this is simple. I'm not overwhelmed, I'm not confused anymore. I know exactly what to do to help get me to my goal. So we're gonna start that April 7th.
It is live. It's gonna run for 21 days. It's gonna run inside my membership. Um, so the participants are gonna get, you know, the live course for the 21 days and replays during that period. They're also gonna get full access to the membership, which I do coaching calls in there, um, weekly or biweekly. Um, I have other courses in there.
There's tons of resources. And then also I do monthly challenges. And we're gonna do a 21 day step challenge. So starting April 7th, we're gonna start that 21 day step challenge to run along with the course. So you'll have access to that, um, and be able to check in. We do like daily check-ins for accountability.
It's a really fun place to be. Um, and there's just so much great stuff in there that can really support you on your journey. Um, I feel like it's really, this opportunity is the perfect, like try before you buy experience for the membership so that all of that for those 21 days is $33 and you get access to all of that.
Um, so you know, if someone out there is just tired of starting over, if they are just like, please give me like a clear mm-hmm. Simple plan that is gonna fit into my life. This is perfect for them. Um, and then I, you could always check out my website. I do private coaching. Um, my website's just finally fit with coach Jess um, dot com, so that's, that's how you can check me out.
Awesome. So you mentioned that your program is starting on the seventh, and I know, um, by the time listeners hear this, it'll be April 9th. Uh, are they still able to join, um, the course and the challenge?
Yes. Yeah. Anybody can jump in at any time and, and there will be replays of, of everything that, that we, um, all of the course modules that we do.
Yeah. The first one is gonna be on April 7th, so that'll be the only one that they miss, um, okay. Live, so they can always hop on and watch the replay of that, um, and jump into the membership and try the course and try the, the challenge and all of that stuff. So, yeah.
Awesome. It sounds like you're a really great resource to help people not feel so overwhelmed with this process and actually like develop a fitness plan that works for them in their own body.
So I really, really love that. Um, and I just wanna say thank you Ja, for hop in on with me today and talking to the audience.
Thank you so much. I was so excited to be here. This is a great conversation. I really appreciate it.
Absolutely. Talk to you later. All right,
bye.
Alright. I really love that conversation with Jess.
Like she went so deep on the very simple things that people often forget about when they're in a weight loss journey. Um, or, you know, getting fit. That. It's like, yeah, let's do the basics, like water, sleep, food, and it's like, nah, let's go and do like 100 squats and whatever else you do in the gym. I don't know.
I haven't gone to the gym in like forever, which I should probably do that anyway. This isn't about me. Um, oh my gosh. Um. No, I just really loved her perspective on bringing simplicity back to health and fitness and also the mindset switch that she had around trying versus training, because as I mentioned in the episode.
When I think of training, I think of something very intensive and often that does feel like it leads to all or nothing mentality. And so I'm really glad that we had that conversation around it. I wanna know, like, what did you get outta this episode? What was your key takeaway? Uh, you can message me over on Instagram.
