You've got to be at peace, be at peace with the season you're in. And I'm at peace more than I probably should be. Or, you know, people think about like, I hate when people are telling me all the time, like, Oh, you have five kids, like life must be, you don't, you don't know, it is hard, but they're also so much joy.
And I bring the joy over the hardness every day.
Oh, love that. Yeah. You gotta, you have to look the bright side, right? Or like. I don't know. Have you've heard of the, the gap, like the gap in the game kind of mentality? Okay. So for the audience, the gap in the game, it's like in the gap, you think about all the things that you don't have.
And when you're living in the game, you think about all the things that you're grateful for, right? And so you have to have those days where you're thinking more about what you're grateful for than what it is that you're lacking, right? And so that, that really helps, especially when you feel like you're losing time, To do work on your business because like For me, I can't, I don't know if this is how you feel or not, but it's like, I love what I'm doing in my podcasting and it like brings me a lot of joy.
And I'm assuming that it also brings you a lot of joy to create these products. Right? Like when you talk, I can hear like how passionate you are about it. And. And so it is really hard when you come from this background of being a high achiever and like actually really loving what you're doing and wanting to put more time into that space, but also really loving your family and wanting to put your time in there because.
They deserve it, right? They deserve to have your attention and your love. Yes,
absolutely. And,
it's like, it really is a working balance. Hi, my name is Gaby Ramely, and I'm your boundary advocate to lead you to a more peaceful life. Four years ago, I was stuck in a deep depression, a fog covered lake in the dead of night, with no idea of where to turn to get back to me or my own needs.
After seeking professional guidance to lead me out of the darkness, advocating for myself, my boundaries, and my overall well being has become a daily practice of self care. Here on the Blissfully Bold podcast, we'll chat about balancing life's chaos within ourselves and in everyday spaces. Pumping the brakes on people pleasing and understanding our personal needs.

This week on the show we have Brittany Johnson, she is the owner and chemist behind the Natural Skincare line, Trades of Brit. And I frickin love this conversation because she is totally my people, so down to earth, so fun.
And we were both just two tired mamas. She's having this really great conversation, as you'll see in the very beginning of our conversation here. Um, we also talk about how she manages to balance all of the things between being a business owner and a momma to five young kids, and how much family Really is important.
So without further ado. Here is Brittany. Good morning, Brittany How are you? I'm great. I'm like, I'm great but tired. We were just talking before the call started
Who's calling me this early do they know how early No, I don't want to talk to anybody aside from you right now. Okay. So I'm going back. We were just talking on the call about how late we stayed up last night. So yeah, like, please, I don't want anyone else to call me this morning. I am focusing on you. So thank you for joining me this morning.
Um, today we are going to be talking about being a super mom, multitasking and being a business owner. And I feel like. The state that we're in right now of like, we're tired, but we're here and we're doing the thing is like the epitome of the conversation. Right. So I like to start every conversation with talking about like, what makes you kick ass and what is your superpower and on your website.
I read that you have always been called like a Jill or a Jack and Jill of all trades, right? And so what makes you kick ass at multitasking and juggling and having so many interests?
Yeah, so it's it's just like who I am. I mean, it's been great with me for like years So I've been playing sports like my whole life started playing soccer when I was five And then went to high school through sport athlete Banned all the things, um, and then went to college and did it was a two sport athlete in college and majored in chemistry.
So having to multitask and juggle multiple things was just like, I thought that's what people did. I didn't know that's not what people did. And they couldn't do multiple things at one time until I realized I was like, Oh wait, you can't do that, that, and that at the same time. They're like, no, I can just focus on one thing.
And I'm like, Oh, But gosh, that's a thing. Um, and so that has just been who I am. Um, and now it's, you know, it's carried over into being a mom, honestly, and a, a business owner. I don't feel like I could live life without being able to have so many juggles, so many things and multitask. So, um, and people always, I'm like, can you like teach me how to do this?
And I was like, I can, but I, you know, like, I don't know, like, I probably have to really sit down and figure out, like, okay, this is what you need to do, like, and, you know, honestly, when I think about it, creating a schedule, making sure you have everything, and, like, maximizing your time, um, like, I was, last night, or yesterday, I just came back, I came back from this 74 hour road trip.
And the first thing, of course, I wanted to do was sit on the couch and relax from not having to
be
in multiple places. But I was like, I have work to do. So make a to do list. This is what you need to do. Check those things off and keep it going. And in the midst of it, you know, being a mom, my daughter wanted to, she has this science kick.
She loves science. Which is
so
sweet for me.
Yeah, I bet.
And she's like, can we do this? And I was like, okay, give me a moment where I can like, knock out a bunch of stuff and then we can work on it. And so she, I'm working and she's doing experiments. And so that was, it was fun.
Nice. Awesome. So I just want to clarify really quickly why that like makes your heart so big about her loving science.
I don't think that I said this in the beginning. Brittany here is a chemist and that is like the perfect segue of what I wanted to talk to you about. It's like, we're talking about, you know, being high achiever, right? Uh, It often comes with like juggling all the things just because like one I think it is like a state of stress that we have become used to but at the same time it's also that We have higher capacity To handle those things because like as you mentioned like you didn't you said you didn't know that Thinking about one thing was a thing and like I was the same and I didn't realize that until I married my husband My husband is ADHD and he's like I can't like I can't Like handle all of what's going on in your head and like just one thing at a time, please Yeah, and so You know, I, I think that comes with like always being labeled as a super smart one, because I, when I think chemist, I think, Oh my gosh, they are so smart, especially for me, like math or science, math and science, they were not my forte, like just not my favorite.
And, um, me like growing up, I felt like I was always labeled as the smart one also. And so it does come with that kind of expectation, I think, from other people. Cause it's like, Oh, like they know what you're capable of. And like, they put this expectation on you. But, moving aside from that, like I mentioned, you're super smart, right?
You have a chemistry background, and you are a professor, right? Um, so that is really awesome. And, I feel like, for me, like I have to work. Like being a stay at home mom isn't necessarily my jam, you know, I want to work like that's my thing and it makes me happy to be in the workforce, um, to be able to do something.
And so coming from your background, being a high achiever, you know, being labeled quote unquote smart, um, like how was that transition for you moving from like academia? into being a stay at home mom. Yeah,
so it's funny you say like, you know, Spark, if you would always say that and I'm like, I just work really hard, like probably so hard that you don't even see it.
So I guess now it's been who I am. Um, so I quit my job teaching high school. Um, it'll be two years in January. And. The, the reason we did this as a family was because I had my second set of twins and child care, as we all know, is very, very expensive and having five children, even more expensive. And so it wasn't anything I remember when my husband and I, um, we were engaged and trying to figure out like, you know, what, you know, what would you want to do?
And I'm like, I don't want to be a stay at home mom. Like, no, it was just because I saw my mom work. Um, and I saw my grandmother work. Like I saw so many women in my life work, stay at home. Mom was not a thing to me at those times. Cause I just didn't know. I was like, these people just don't want to go to work.
Like they just, you know, clearly there must be just rich women who can't, who just don't want to work. Very, very immature mindset because I didn't know what it took to be a standalone
mom. Um,
and now transitioning, so I still have the luxury of working as a professor. So I teach, um, At a university and a community college and I do it online.
So like you said, like having the, to be able to multi tax and I want to still be able to help, um, our household. That was really important for us to be able to, okay, we need to have some kind of other income coming in while we're trying to build this business. And, um, so I teach online part time. Um, and then.
I am a stay at home mom. Like now, last year I had four kids at home with me. Now I have just two at home with me. Um, the second, the first set of twins is now in school with my oldest and then the babies are at home, which is, it is, it's hard to juggle. Um,
When
they were, when the four were home, I didn't realize how much freedom I have, but now I am all things.
It's like I'm a mom to just one child, even though there's two at home. Um, because there are two and it just, they just want all my attention. But the transition, it was challenging. And I will say the reason why it was challenging is just not understanding how to navigate. And since I had. You know, for kids at home, getting up and going to the park was not easy.
Like having to keep my two eyes on four children is very hard. And so
like now
even going, you know, we can go, I'll go out. We'll, you know, take them out somewhere. We'll go for a walk. It's a little easier, but now that they're more mobile, it's still challenging because they don't want to be in a stroller.
They want to be out and running around. So, um, I was laughing. I saw somebody's Instagram posts. I'm like, you know, I'm a stay at home mom, but like, I need help and you know, my husband and I have talked about that, but it's, it goes back to that, like, Jill of all traits. I know I can juggle because I have some friends who have, you know, childcare for one kid, but that doesn't make sense for our household.
Because. I am able to kind of juggle. Maybe I don't do everything well, but I do it to the best of my ability. Um,
yeah.
And I, you know, I enjoy it. And I know some moms, once their kids leave and go to school, they either decide to go back to work or they decide to go, you know, become a mom. Say a stay at home mom or whatever.
The case might do whatever best for their household. I don't know what I want to do. Um, I like this journey. I've been to places now, like, I don't want to go back to a traditional nine to five. Um, yeah. And I do love being able to not have to have my children in daycare, which is really special for me.
It's really special for me. Yeah,
absolutely. I totally get that because So I was laid off in June and like, I've always, like, when I've, whenever I've had like a growth journey, it's always been like after a job. And it's like, I'm finally like coming into my own of like, okay, I'm not really liking, like, You know working in a corporate environment like maybe for a short term, it's fine But for like long term, it's just it's not who I am and like coming into this entrepreneurial journey It's like it's been challenging, you know And I am thankful at the same time that I can make my schedule to work around my kids So my daughter she's six and she's in school all day You know, like your oldest, right now your oldest three, right?
Um, and like my son, he has, tomorrow's his birthday, actually. And so he's going to be three. Um, and I have him in childcare part time. So that way, when I am working here at the house, I can focus because when he's here, I can't focus. Um, and so that is something that has worked, but it's like you are able to mold what you want to be.
You know your life to be and how you can make it work and you actually took the chemistry that you love Right into the home with you both out of necessity to care for your babies, right? And to create this business So like why don't you tell us more about the business that you have created in trades of brit and natural skincare?
Yeah
so I There's a I have a rewind if I rewind back to when I was in college, so majored in chemistry undergrad and I did a lot of research. So I was doing not to get too much into it inorganic research and every, every semester, every summer I was doing research and I had this like mindset where I was like, it's great to like, you know, sit and formulate and make all kinds of fun stuff and mess with chemicals.
It was so much fun and, but the thing that like messed my mindset completely up was like, but I can't, I'm not seeing the final product. And so that was the thing that like, it, it set with me for so long. And I was like, well, so I've been sitting here making this chemical for the past couple of days. And I still don't see the end product.
Like, yeah, I might have like a substance, but I can't use it. immediately or that the intended purpose is still not finished. And so what I did, I think I don't know what my mom is very creative. And so it's creative and crafty. And so I remember going to her and I was like, I want to make soap. And she's like, All right, let's do it.
And I was like, Hi, let's do it. And it was, there's, there's, you know, very various ways you can make soap. But at that time, I just, I think I just researched one and we learned that it was hot process. And so, of course, it may, you know, I had to use lye. I've used other chemicals that were way more dangerous than lye.
Um, And so I was like, Oh yeah, this is a piece of cake. Um, so we're over here making soap and, you know, it was mostly me making soap. And, you know, she just kind of like supervising, I guess, in a sense, just making sure I don't burn her house down. Um, and so I made it and I was like, wow, like, The satisfaction of completing a process from start to finish and then being able to use it, regardless of how pretty it was, it was functional.
And I was like, Oh my God, I want more. And so I would start making other natural, you know, Not lotions, but like body butters and all of those different things. Nothing too fancy. Um, uh, soap was probably the most complicated thing that I was making at the time. And so that was great. I would only make them occasionally.
It wasn't anything like I was necessary. But, um, then I went to graduate school, didn't do anything because who has time to make soap in graduate school, so, um, doing that. Amen. It didn't start until I got married and I was like, let me pick something that would just, I need something else to do and started making that.
And when we moved to Arizona, everything about Arizona, like the air was dry. The water was super hard and I'm noticing like my skin. I was like, DC where we were, we lived at to Arizona, that cross country, like I've never been to a dry climate. I didn't realize how my skin was affected by it. And so, when I had my daughter, about a year after we moved to Arizona, Um, Her skin also got really dry and I was like, okay, so I started picking up making soap again I was like, I'll just make some soap.
Done. Great. Now we're fine. We don't have to because we were using Liquid soap at the time and that wasn't helping So it's like let me just make my own and I can save a bunch of money. I'll just make my own soap So fast forward I started making my own just for the family and I remember we moved and a friend of mine was like, hold on, and I was making it and just giving it away.
I was like, here, take this. I have a bunch of it. And she was like, oh, thanks. She was like, this looks really good. And it's actually really good. Like, why don't you sell it? And I was like, who's going to buy this? It's ugly. She was like, it's not ugly. And I was like, yes, it is. Girl, bye. Thank you. But no, thank you.
Um, And so once again, like on my research brain, I was like, maybe this is a thing. Like maybe people will actually buy my soap, but it has to look pretty, the perfectionist in me, it has to look good.
Um,
it could have been, I could, I guess now, like I've seen a lot of soap, it could have been ugly soap.
People probably would have bought it, but whatever. Is it functional? And you know, like, here's my process. Like, no, it has to be pretty and functional. Um, but yeah, so that transitioned into Trades of Bricks. Soap we started with and then my mindset was like, well, you can't just be clean. You also have to be moisturized.
So then I brought in body cream and some body polish. Um, now we're doing a whole bunch of other things that I probably need to like refocus, but they all tie into each other and just skincare in general. Um, I have created a facial line of like products that I use every day and people like, how do you, what do you do on your skin?
And I was like, I don't do much. I just wash my face and then use some facial serum and some, uh, toner that I've made. And so that's something that I've been using for over the past year and I'm enjoying it. It's, it's fun. I was talking to my sister all the other day and she was like, why don't you get bored?
And I was like, because I learned how to just keep it fresh. Um, I'm that cereal, like. I leave a job after three years. And so we made it to three years in business. And I was like, I don't want to quit yet. My husband was like, you invested a lot of money into this. So don't quit.
I feel that's so hard. The serial three years.
Yeah,
it's same.
I'm glad that I'm not alone. Like I'm speaking to my people right now. You are,
you are. It's like you have to, it's like the constant need for a challenge, right? So you, yeah, like I get it. I get it. And
that's, that's where I'm at. I'm like, I'm, I feel challenged because I'm always trying to like recreate new products.
And so now there are some things we want to get to some shampoos and like really, Fancy, like honing into my facial care line and like that, you know, I want to make products that are once again functional, um, a good making pretty products, but now I'm into a place of just a lot of what I'm doing is for dry skin and, you know, my kids.
I feel like kids growing is a never ending cycle. As adults, we kind of stay the same. Our hormones, unless you're pregnant, your hormones stay the same, like stay the same. But kids are, they're always evolving. And so we literally, I've had shown pictures of what my daughter's skin looked like before to what it looks like now.
And so I've been, She's like my, I hate to say it, but she's my little experiment. Because her skin was so, so dry. Um, and so being able to like help her skin, I'm like, if I can fix your skin, girl, I know somebody out there. And then when I figure all of that out, I'll probably get rid of a bunch of products and focus on those things.
Because yeah,
I love that. I love especially that you're focusing on skin care. Um, I know that I have looked at your website and I looked at all the different products. Um, and I'm like, Oh, there's some like goodies here that I really want to try. Like I want to try the muscle rub and now you're talking about skin care.
And I'm like, oh, that's what I wanna do. 'cause I don't do much other than like wash my face and put on moisturizer also because I'm like, who? I don't have time. Yeah. . Absolutely. Or I don't want to make time. Rather I'll state it that way. Um, to do like a five step face care pro like process. Not, no, I'm not doing it.
So I love that. You know, your, this is like practical. It's great. And I think that helps in the multitasking, right. That we were talking about earlier like you want to make things that are more efficient So that way you can streamline like your life, right? So like between like balancing being the mom that we were talking about earlier and then you know, you're here Experimenting and creating new products like that's amazing.
But it's like, okay. How do you Like in your mind, go to a place where it's like, okay, this is what I need to do. And these are the, all the things that I need to get together and multitask and like, put it, set it up for yourself. Like what kind of tips can you offer people to help them prioritize? Like you said earlier, it's like, can be, can you teach me, do a little mini session here?
So I think, like I said, kind of going back, I'm a, I'm a list, I need lists. Um, And schedule. I think those two are the biggest things that help anybody out. There is this calendar I want to throw on the wall and my husband is not allowing me to do it yet. And I'm like, I'm going to get this calendar because yes, I have my phone, but to literally see my day mapped out is very helpful.
Now grant, like I don't schedule my day to the hour because that would be Just from my brain, that would be too overwhelming. And then if I missed something, then I'd be like, darn it. Like. You know, like that, that person, that perfectionist in me, but literally I just have a to do list and in the morning or whenever, you know, you kind of get a chance to sit down and do it.
You can do it at the, that night before, whatever works best for you. It's like map out the things that you have to do now, even if it's like 90 things that you're like, I have 90 things to do this week, what are the top three things that you can do today? And then if you know, like, okay. Say for example, like yesterday I knew I had to make, um, I had to make products.
I had to ship out products. And then I also, of course, had to be a mom. Like you have to cook. You have to do all of those things. Not like did everything get done? Probably not. Like if I had 10, we'll say if I had 50 products to make and I knew that I had other things to do, let's do 10. 15 today, 15 tomorrow.
Um, if you are, if you have more time, like so I said, my kids were at home all day yesterday. So like navigating that was kind of a challenge, but, um, literally making that like to do list. And for me, like it's satisfaction being able to like check it off. And so I think I had, I had way too many things on my to do list yesterday.
So I, but I devoted a bunch of time, like today I know I won't. Um, my daughter looked at my list. She was like, You've only done like four things. No, she said, you've only done three things. Girl, this is a seven process, seven lists. And I'm on
number five. So that's an accomplishment.
So yeah, I would definitely say the list for me are really huge. Um, And then if you can like delegate anything, delegate.
So
like my, my kids, you know, it's not child labor. They actually, they actually wanted to help. They're like, mom, how can I help you? And I'm like, oh my gosh. So my love language is acts of service.
And so I'm like, oh my goodness, that makes me feel really good. So as I'm trying to clean bottles, they're drying the bottles. And so that was super helpful. If you can have somebody to come in and help you so you can kind of get other things done. Um, Those things are, you know, just being able to bring your kids in for me.
That's also been like a huge, not just like time saver, but also a way that I can still interact with my children. Cause I know that's a, that's a big thing for us. Like stay at home moms, like we want to always be. in mommy, but we can be in mommy, but while we're also like, while they're helping and they're interacting, um, they learn so much, like just those qualities of, as I was saying earlier, as my daughter was experimenting, I saw so much of me in her and I was like, this is a little scary because there's stuff everywhere, but it's such a joy to be like, wow, like.
She loves science just as much as I am, as much as I do. And then she also just wants to be a helper. Like those qualities for just service, help, care, love, attention to detail. Like we're learning, I'm teaching her math. I'm teaching her how to read procedures, how to follow directions, how to be attentive to details, like all of those different things.
Like I'm still momming in those moments, but I'm also taking care of what I'm having to do. And then when my list, whether, you know, if I didn't finish all of my lists that day, cool, don't stress out. Bring it up for the next day and then, you know, re evaluate these are the things that I need. And then I'm gonna be the biggest thing that I love how you said this before we started the call, give yourself grace.
Like that is, if you are a stay at home mom or a mom in general, give yourself grace should be on a t shirt. Like I should just make a t shirt that says, give yourself grace. Yeah, absolutely. For sure. If you stress out about the little things, My goodness, what are the big things going to do? Like,
you,
you sit in this place of just like not being able to Be the best you and the best you is actually who you already are.
You've actually made this person who is somebody who is not you way bigger than who you actually are. And I would, you know, like, those are the things where I've just had to learn that not everything gets done. I look at my schedule for the week, for the day, for the morning, map out what are the things that I can do.
And I just do those things and then I'm okay with it. Like. I do markets on the weekends and sometimes I'm like, darn, I did not get done, but they don't know. They have no idea. Like the people around me, like, yes, I should have probably made an extra side. Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't, you don't know. Right. You know, but I think that is like, I give myself so much grace.
Um,
and,
and, you know, give myself so much grace and love and be like, okay, today was not the best day. Let's try to do it again tomorrow. And I've had some, there's been some rough days, but honestly, like. There's always tomorrow. There's always tomorrow. And you get, you literally push the reset button. Every single morning.
And if you're not pushing that reset button. Like. You, you fit in the past so much.
I love that.
Yeah.
I love that. Like not taking the baggage from yesterday into tomorrow. Like, yes, I love that. Like, I, I don't know why I didn't think of that like before this call, but it's boom, mind blown. Like it makes so much sense.
Like I, I did say before the call, like we need to give ourselves grace, but I never thought of it in the terms of like, Carrying baggage over, you know, and that is so great I love that you also explained it the way that you did about like having all of your lists and like just it carrying over I actually created this Daily planner sheet.
It's called the daily planner sheet for the overthinking high achiever. I
love it
Yeah, because so I have like three different sections. It's like what are the two things that I have to do today? like They have to get done. What are the things that, like, need to get done, but they're kind of on the back burner?
And, like, what are the things that, like, they need to get done, but they're also, like, way, way, like, they have some time to get done. And I have, like, another section of, like, self compassion. And then the entire right side of the sheet is, like, One big journal space. And I, I liked to use it as microjournaling where if I just had like thoughts pop up into my head, like I just write them down there and like forget about them, but it's a planner.
So like a planner sheet. So you can go back in the days and see like, Oh yeah, like, I don't want to forget about that. Cause I have to look at it. Like you were talking about needing that calendar on your wall, right? That big calendar, cause it helps you map out your day. Like this is like, like that, but on the planner sheet.
So I would actually love that on a wall. Like if I had that, that'd be great. That'd be wonderful. So amazing. All right, so all of that multitasking, like I, I'm aware because like I said, I, I resonate with you with what you said very deeply and burnout is a risk, right? Because you are juggling. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Cause you are juggling all of the things. And at the same time you're fighting perfectionism, right? Because I feel like oftentimes with high achievers comes that perfectionism. And also comparison of like, oh, well, this other person who's also a high achiever is doing this X, Y, and Z, like, why can't I keep up with, with them?
But it's like, you're not playing a them, like a keep up with them game. Like keep up with yourself. Like, it, you have to like balance it all, right, to not burn out and feel like you're not enough. Yes. So, how do you do that for yourself? Oof. I was
like, man. I know. This is something, and you know, this is the reason why social media is a necessary evil.
Um. And when I started my business, there were so many things like being on social media, I got in the comparison gap so often that I'm like, Oh, you know, social media and I hear all the time. Like, I don't know how y'all post every day. Maybe that's what I need to do. And then like jump off. But. Goodness. So like, how do I, how do I stay out of the gap is I've had to like, self talk.
Oh, I think I'm a dreamer and a creative. Yeah. And, and, and a nerd. You gotta know that nerd in there. Um, my husband is practical. Like, budgets, sheets, like all of those things. And so, like, I will come to him with this, like, idea. I think I came to him with this idea once before. In my mind, I'm laughing because I remember the conversation.
I was like, alright, so, I'm going to, like, open up a store. And he was like,
what? And I was like, yeah. I'm
going to open up a store. Come again? Like, tomorrow. It was like, what do you, what do you mean you're gonna open up a store? I was like, well, she got a store, she got a store, she got a store, so we had to open up a store, like, open up a store now.
He was like, no, we're not, how much does it cost to open up a store? And I was like,
What does that matter? I have enough money. Let's just do it. Like, it'll be fine. It'll be fine. So, this, and like, so what I literally did after that conversation, like, I had a conversation with him and I thought he was a dream killer. And, um,
You dream killer! I'm a dream killer. Um,
and then I went to like, My, my team, like my, you know, like my, my, um, council of team for my business.
And I was like, okay, I have to ask the question because he's a dream killer. And I need you to tell me this in another way. So I want to open up a store and they're like, okay, I hear you. And they just gave me so many practical steps. And I was like, after I left the conversation, I was like, Oh, all right.
That wasn't practical for me to open up a store tomorrow. Like we could plan this out, but why did he just tell it to me the way you told it to me? But, you know, like literally sitting back and I was like, okay, that, that honestly was the comparison you, we get on social media, everything looks pretty, everything looks beautiful, and we don't know what it took for that person to get to where they are.
And so literally my reminder, every time I get into the comparison gap, like what, what sacrifice did they take to get here? Did they sacrifice their time for their family? Do they sacrifice a job? Did they sacrifice themselves, honestly, to get to where they are? Money, we can go on and on and on about the different sacrifices that it took.
But I literally like at the end of every year, when I look at like, how much should we make? Yeah, I could have did. 30 more markets. Um, but I also would have lost hours, hundreds of hours worth of time with my family. So we've now literally mapped it out where we have the seasons, like spring and fall are huge seasons for markets.
So those are the times I devote into my business. And then the summer is when I devote time to my family. And then I have to really fit into that space. Like there's a, you know, we are a podcast, there's Instagram, there's, Your friends having a conversation, but, you know, I think I hear women who are like, oh yeah, I'm a six, seven, eight figure earner.
And I was like, dang, that's really great. I'm getting there. I'm there almost, but then I'm like, but what sacrifice? What did you have to do to get there? What background did you have? Like all of those different things. And like, I didn't have a business background, so like I had to literally research so much to get to where I am right now and I'm at a really great place.
I'm at a comfortable place. I don't have to, you know, like, Oh, you have a market. Okay. I could take her to a market now if I want to. And so. It's, it's literally like, how do I jump every single time? Like going back, I jumped out of the comparison gap by looking at what sacrifice does this person have to make?
And I don't know. So I look at, I kind of compare it. Like if I were in their shoes, what would I be doing? Wow. I would have to be sacrificing so much that I know that I'm not ready for yet. And so that brings me so much peace that puts me at a place of like, okay, we don't need a story. Because it took her 12 years in her business to get to here.
And like having those conversations, it took her a long time to get to this point. Girl, you've been doing this for three days. Sit down somewhere. And so, I'm like, you're right, I don't. Let's do the business first and like figure out all those things. Um, because my kids are going to be jumping into like sports and activities real soon because they're jumping out of the, Oh, cute, like three year old, we're about to get into that six, seven, eight, you know?
And so I want to be there for my kids. I want to be there for my husband. I don't want to have to travel without him and do a bunch of things without him and have to do something. I don't want to live a solo, lonely life. Well, I have people next to me. And so if it takes me a little longer to get there, cool.
I'm fine with it. Um, I don't have to, you know, we kind of talked earlier even about like, put on the makeup and look beautiful and glamorous and all of these different things. And I'm like, well, this is how I'm going to show up. And That's okay. That's okay. Because I don't have a makeup team behind me. I literally just taught my daughter how to make a straight video yesterday.
So, let's, we don't have the makeup team yet. Um, once again, the comparison again, I'm like, how does everybody get all of these Instagram videos of somebody videotaping them? Like, are they hiring, like, an entourage? Oh, my entourage is not here yet. They're still trying to figure out how to make a video of their chin.
Um, so yeah, like. You've got to be at peace, be at peace with the season you're in. And I'm at peace more than I probably should be. Or, you know, people think about like, I hate when people are telling me all the time, like, Oh, you have five kids. Like life must be, you don't, you don't know. It is hard, but they're also so much joy.
And I bring the joy over the hardness every day.
Oh, love that. Yeah. You gotta, you have to look the bright side, right? Or like. The I don't know have you've heard of the the gap like the gap in the game Kind of mentality. Okay. So for the audience the gap in the game It's like in the gap you think about all the things that you don't have And when you're living in the game you think about all the things that you're grateful for right?
And so you have to have those days where you're thinking more about what you're grateful for Than what it is that you're lacking, right? And so that that really helps especially when you feel Like you're losing time To do work on your business because like for me, I can't I don't know if this is how you feel or not But it's like I love what i'm doing in my podcasting And it like brings me a lot of joy.
And I'm assuming that it also brings you a lot of joy to create these products. Right? Like when you talk, I can hear like how passionate you are about it. And so it is really hard when you come from this background of being a high achiever and like actually really loving what you're doing and wanting to put more time into that space, but also really loving your family and wanting to put your time in there because.
They deserve it, right? They deserve to have your attention and your love. Yes,
absolutely. And
it's like, it really is a, a working balance. And then like, we're coming up, right now we're recording in October, but once this episode airs, it's going to be November. So people are going to be in the holiday. Oh my God, I gotta, I gotta buy gifts.
Right. And so like, you're gonna, you're gonna have Black Friday and then it's gonna be Christmas. And so like, after having, you know, the balance between You know work life and family basically, right and then throwing in the holiday season. How do you balance it? Especially as a product owner. Do you do like black friday sales christmas sales all those things?
Yeah, so this year i've been Like trying to figure out what we're going to do And so what we did last year, which was helpful I had family in town, which was really nice and I did way too many markets at one time But I usually do most markets. Um You We don't do any Black Friday sells yet. I've been trying to figure out how I really want to navigate this This time because it is it's hard like trying to compete against all of the fluff around me and That's also really challenging because it's like, okay, yeah, like don't buy from me.
And what I did last year as I did a market on Black Friday, which probably was one of the worst things to do, honestly, it was so horrible. And so learning from that experience, I will not do that again. So what I do is, um, I participate in like small business Saturday, which is the Saturday after, which has been really helpful.
We did a, we do markets after that, which is great. Probably like my most favorite thing. And then I run a bunch of, um, sales on that day. Um, and then we're trying to figure out, I want to do something for Thanksgiving this year, just being able to give back. And, um, so really trying to figure out, I think I'm going to put a, like a call out to my Instagram followers.
It's just like, what, what do you guys would love to see in terms of like giving or the, Any organizations out there that you really like feel and then kind of see if like, how do I resonate with those as well? There's a couple that I already have in mind. Um, so I'll probably throw those out as well. But, um, yeah, it's hard to juggle.
So markets are our biggest. point right now. Um, and so I really like, we grow our online sales as much as we want to, and then we can, then when the online sales work, then a lot of those Black Friday sins can come in, but it has to be worth it. Um, and so, yeah, we do markets. I do a market on Right after, um, that after black Friday, so small business Saturday.
And then, um, kind of leading up to it as a thought of time. So, like I said earlier, my husband knows that like, this is market season until we get to this place where everything is online or in person. Um, he just like, okay, I know that I'm going to have to sacrifice, but there is Time allotted for that and it's literally I was doing two days last year.
It's just one day this year So that way i'm not driving myself crazy because I cook for thanksgiving We do a whole Maybe we do a whole big feast and we also have friends over so we do a friends giving Um, since we're not near family Um, and so yeah, that is kind of how we balance it all um and make it make it easy, I guess, in a sense.
I do a couple programs. So we do, um, I'm in this one program and they do an online marketplace and they do all of the Black Friday stuff to them. So I just kind of like, just, if you want to buy Black Friday stuff, go that way until we can figure this thing out. But yeah, it's a lot of trial and error. Um, And the other thing, we're in year three, so year four will probably be different because now it's like every year I plan out the holiday season better and better.
Um, so I'm like, I'm already like, this year has already passed me. I'm already thinking about what happens next season, like not even next season, but next year this time.
